The Wildlife of the Forest

Overview

This is the follow up title to The Story of the Forest and is a fact-filled guide to the plants and animals of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, written for ages 7-11. The book has over 200 colour photos of wildlife plus lovely illustrations by local artist Kate Sheppard.

The book takes a look at the many habitats found across the Forest including oak woods, conifer woods, meadows, ponds, rivers, quarries, rides and paths, and heathlands. For each habitat there are sections about species which are easy to spot, rarer and particularly interesting.

There are special features on 'wow wildlife', some of the most exciting animals that live in the Forest:

  • Wild boar
  • Adders
  • Goshawks
  • Great crested newts
  • Pine martens
  • Beavers

Many of the photos were taken in the Forest by local wildlife experts and enthusiasts.

The book includes wildlife quizzes and puzzles, plus sections about the special projects going on to protect the Forest's environment. It is available to buy from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and shops in the Forest of Dean.
